How to Talk to Your Doctor About Cannabis Use

Have you had a bad experience disclosing cannabis use to a doctor? Did a doctor's attitude toward cannabis impact the quality of care you received? You're not alone. Unfortunately, a prevailing stigma, lack of exposure to current marijuana research , and confusion about the legality of discussing cannabis with patients are still barriers within the medical community that keep doctors from treating their cannabis-using patients accurately and fairly. One thing medical and non-medical cannabis users have in common with the rest of the world is that all need access to medical care. So what is a cannabis user to do? To answer this question, Weedmaps News spoke with two experts on the subject. Dr. Bonni Goldstein is a Medical Director of Canna-Centers, a medical marijuana evaluation service in Lawndale, California, and a medical adviser to Weedmaps. Ted Chan is the CEO of CareDash , a fast-growing healthcare review website. Both Goldstein and Chan have consulted with thousands o...

What Do Older Marijuana Consumers Use and Think? Researchers Now Know.

A new survey finds that seniors are blurring the lines between medicinal and recreational marijuana use. The study , “Measuring Attitudes Toward Medical and Recreational Cannabis Among Older Adults in Colorado,” appeared in the May 14, 2019, issue of the Oxford Academic-published journal Gerontologist, and found changing attitudes among the fastest-growing population segment of cannabis users: adults ages 60 and older.   The study, which was conducted by researchers from the universities of Colorado , Illinois , and Iowa , was funded by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Data were collected from a 2017 cross-sectional survey of 274 older Coloradans ages 60 to 94, with a mean age of 72, about 65% of whom were women who were recruited from senior centers, health clinics, cannabis clubs, and dispensaries statewide. The survey included 83 questions on a variety of topics exploring the attitudes, prevalence, predictors, patterns, and health outcomes relating to ca...

Being LGBTQ in the Cannabis Industry: A Roundtable Discussion

All eyes are on the LGBTQ community during Pride month. June often becomes full of fabulous celebrations, “woke” marketing tactics, and sometimes difficult discussions about LGBTQ rights, representation, equality, and advocacy. Weedmaps News sat down with four cannabis industry leaders — Christine De La Rosa, co-founder of The People's Dispensary in Oakland, California; Leon Mostovoy, founder of Wings of Wellness and co-founder of Pride Wellness in Los Angeles; Buck Angel, co-founder of Pride Wellness; and Katie Stem, co-founder of Peak Extracts — who identify as members of the LGBTQ community to ask them where they see the LGBTQ community's place in weed culture at large. The roundtable of business owners help dissect the effective ways that advocacy and protest history for LGBTQ rights and cannabis legality are interwoven, as well as how consumers can be a part of Pride without feeling like they are taking advantage or co-opting LGBTQ people with rainbow swag . How Ha...

Testing Positive for Marijuana Won't Cost You a Job in Nevada

Two backers of a pioneering Nevada law to prevent employers from rejecting job-seekers based on a pre-employment marijuana test cast the effort June 12, 2019, as an anti-discrimination measure in a state where recreational cannabis sales are booming and rules about legal adult-use consumption are evolving. The law, which goes into effect in January 2020, won't ban testing job applicants for cannabis chemicals , Democratic Assembly members Dina Neal and Edgar Flores said. But it will prohibit many employers from using the results to turn someone away. “We needed to ensure we were providing safeguards for marijuana users who are following state law and are trying to get jobs.” Flores said. Neal said the law does not liberalize marijuana use in the workplace, where employers can and do prohibit drug or alcohol use. It instead aims to address what Neal called “a moral and social dilemma” caused by the ability to detect trace amounts of THC in blood or urine weeks or even months...

Americans Want CBD Sold Over-The-Counter, Gallup Poll Finds

A majority of Americans familiar with cannabidiol (CBD) say it should be available as an over-the-counter drug and believe that the compound has health benefits, according to a Gallup survey released June 14, 2019. The CBD craze emerged from the marijuana reform movement and escalated following the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, which federally legalized hemp and its derivatives including CBD . The survey, which involved 1,017 phone interviews conducted from May 15-30, offers some insight into the substance's widespread appeal. Thirty-nine percent of Americans overall said that people should be able to access CBD as an over-the-counter drug, with 21 percent saying a prescription should be required. Thirty-six percent of respondents said they weren't familiar with the non-intoxicating compound . Source: Gallup But when Gallup asked people who said they were familiar with CBD the same question, 61 percent said that CBD should be sold over the counter and 33 percent said it...

Faced with a Marijuana Glut, Oregon May Start Denying New Grower Permits

Oregon is awash in so much legal weed that if growing were to stop today, it could take more than six years by one estimate to smoke or eat it all. Now, the state is planning to curb production. Five years after voters legalized recreational marijuana, lawmakers have given the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) more leeway to deny new growing licenses based on supply and demand. The bill passed in Oregon's House on May 30, 2019, in a 39-18 vote after it was approved earlier in the Senate . It is aimed not just at reducing the huge surplus, but also at preventing diversion of unsold legal marijuana into the unlicensed market and forestalling a crackdown by federal prosecutors. “The harsh reality is we have too much product on the market,” said Democratic Gov. Kate Brown, who intends to sign the bill. Supply is running twice as high as demand, meaning that the surplus from last year's harvest alone could amount to roughly 2.3 million pounds, or 1.043 million kilogram...
